Week 3 Discussion Question

We find out more about Albert's life and family in Hungary. We learn that both of his parents have died because they had a newspaper that "wrote bad things about Hitler and the Nazis." While telling Lily about his family history, he says that "if they loved us, they would not have done that (wrote the newspaper), they would not have bothered with newspapers." Do you agree with Albert? Do you think his parents shouldn't have written the newspaper? Why or why not? Do you think Albert's parents loved him? Make sure to really explain your thinking.

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response. Type it in your blogging doc first so you can edit it if necessary.

  1. I don’t agree with Albert because his parents still should not of done the paper if they wanted to keep their family safe. I think his parents did love him, but the war just drove them to want be heroes. They wanted to keep Albert and Ruth safe. They did not want them to live in a world when they could be killed any second they wanted to prevent the mass murderer from getting to them. But, it just made it worse. Albert's parents wanted to keep their family happy and safe. And the newspaper cheered them up and other people. I also think they should have kept the newspaper more of a secret and when there was enough to say they should have stopped.

    1. Addie I don't exactly agree with you. I think Albert's parents wrote newspaper to stand up to Hitler. I think they did it for a reason. But over all, GREAT thinking and details!

  2. I disagree with Albert because his parents knew what kind of bad things that Hitler and the Nazis was doing and they wanted to stand up to him. It didn’t mean that Albert’s parents didn’t love them, they probably thought that Hitler was going to try to take over Hungary next. Albert’s parents were trying to protect Albert and Ruth from the Nazis. That proves that they love their kids.

  3. I do not agree with Albert. I think his parents wrote the newspaper to stand up to Hitler. Albert should appreciate that his parents tried to stand up to the Germans. I think deep down Albert knows that his parents loved him a lot. I think Albert's parents loved him so much that they felt like they needed to stand up to Hitler. Truly Albert knows that his parents love him so much!

    1. Eden, I think you are right. Sometimes it is less painful to be mad.

  4. I don’t agree with Albert because I think their family loved him and Ruth. Their parents were trying to get children to go away from danger like Hitler and the Nazis. Their parents knew they could be killed because of the newspaper. Children have to go to peaceful places, not dangerous or mean or creepy places. His family are now angels and watching their children. They makes sure the kids are safe. So one problem is Albert’s sister got sick and can’t go with Albert. Ruth have to stay and the lady takes care of her. Albert is so sad and lonely and he wants to go with Ruth. His parents loved their kids because remember Lily’s mom died and her mom loved her so much and her dad loved his daughter and he had to go to war. Lily loved her family and has the same feelings Albert’s has. He misses his mom and dad also his family and his sister.

    1. Alyy, great points! I like how you notice that Lily and Albert have both lost parents who loved them very much. They have both suffered so much sadness in their young lives.

    2. Alyy, I agree that Lily really wants to have a friend and she feels lonely. Even though she likes to be in charge, she offered to share the key to Margaret’s house with Albert. She didn’t have to do that. She could have said that the key and the house were her responsibility and that she couldn’t share the key. Instead she found a hiding place behind a rock for the key so both Albert and Lily could come and go to feed and care for the cat. Either Albert didn’t understand that Lily wanted to help with the cat, or he didn’t want her help.
As readers we know what Lily is thinking and feeling. On p. 71 we read,
“She wanted to say, “It’s my cat too.” She wanted to say, “I was the one who saved her.” She didn’t, though.”
I am impressed that even though Lily feels like the cat belongs to her since she saved it, she still lets Albert be in charge of the cat. We see that Lily is trying her best to be nice to Albert in hopes he will be nice back to her. Then they could become friends.

    3. Sorry that my post above is in the wrong week. Oops! Anyway...
Alyy, I agree with you that Albert's parents loved him and his sister, Ruth. They had a very difficult choice to make, whether or not to publish the newspaper. The newspaper was a way to communicate the horrible truth about what Hitler and the Nazis were doing so that more people would choose to fight against them. The parents knew they were taking a big risk but they also knew how important it was to stop Hitler and the Nazis. I think his parents believed they were doing the right thing and they hoped to survive the war and bring their children back home to a place that was safe and free of the Nazis. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way they hoped it would.

  5. Mrs. Potts, I think I posted twice. Sorry. I don't remember pressing publish.

As a parent, I want my children to know right from wrong. I want them to be brave for justice. I also want them to see me and their father doing things to help others. I do not agree with Albert that his parents did not love him and Ruth. Albert has not told Lily about how his parents cared for or educated or showed Albert faith, but just writing about the Nazi’s does not prove they did not love him. Albert’s parents owned a newspaper. That job requires people to report what is happening, but it also requires the Editor to state his opinion and defend those opinions based on facts. What if Albert’s parents hadn’t? What if they had pretended that persecuting people based on their religion was right and just went with the Nazi’s. What would be worse.
When I was in College, my friend gave me this quote by Martin Niemöller who was a Protestant pastor in Germany during World War II. After the war, having survived a concentration camp himself, he gave many talks on the war and said many versions of the following:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. (http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007392)
Maybe someday, Albert will be proud of his parents for using the only weapon they had, writing, to oppose the hatred of Hitler and the Nazi party. They spoke out.

  6. I disagree with Albert because .his parents were just doing what they believed should have been done. The Nazi’s and Hitler were not good. Albert’s parents shouldn’t have had the newspaper because then the Nazi’s would not have come after them and Albert would not have had to come to America. I think Albert’s parents loved him because before the Nazi’s came they had Albert and Ruth go with Nagymamma so they would be safe.

  7. Peter I agree with you. His parents were doing what they thought they should do. The Nazis and Hitler are horrible.

  8. Albert's parents newspaper activity put their family at risk, but I believe they wrote the anti-Hitler propaganda with the hope of bringing the war to an end and making the world a better place for Ruth and Albert. Their propaganda was very important and they were brave to take on the task. I am certain they loved their children very much. I think that with time, Albert will come to understand that his mother spoke the truth when she said, "Szeretlek" (I love you) as they were readying for the Nazi's arrival. It is natural for Albert to be angry and blame his parent's newspaper for their deaths. He also has a lot of anger with regard to his having had to leave Ruth in France. He is frustrated because not only did he not get to say good-bye to his parents before he and Ruth fled Hungary in Mr. Kovac's car, he also didn't get to say goodbye to his sister before he boarded the ship to America.
