Week 1 Discussion Question

Before Lily leaves Margaret's house in Chapter 4, Margaret gives Lily a key to her house. She explains, "This is for you, the back door key. You can sneak in, come right up to the attic, and write your next five books." Why is this key such a good gift for Lily? Knowing now what you know about Lily (that she can be a troublemaker), why could this gift get her in trouble?

Make sure to write in complete sentences using a RAD response. You should use specific examples from the book. Make sure to answer all parts of the question and edit your work before posting it to the site. You should type it in your blogging doc first so you don't lose your work and can go back and edit. 1. I think the key is a good gift for Lily because she can go in to the house. She can go up to the attic and write her stories, too. Also, she will be able to remember Margaret when ever she goes up to the attic. But, the key might be able to get her in trouble because her Gram might find out. It would be bad
if Gram found out because her Gram will get mad because she is not aloud to be in there alone. Well not even alone just not aloud to be in there at all. Her Gram is a little strict to Lily so she could get grounded.

    1. I agree that the key is a good gift for Lily! You are right that Gram will likely be very upset if she finds out that Lily has been entering the Dillon's house. She does seem a little strict.

  2. The key is the perfect gift for Lily because she will have a secret hideout to spend time in while she is in Rockaway for the summer. She has a very vivid imagination and could likely spend hours alone in Margaret's attic writing stories, never-minding the spelling, of course! It will also help her feel close to Margaret being in her house.
I see trouble making ahead for Lily because we have already noticed that she lies to get out of doing chores: packing, practicing her piano, setting the table. I am sure she will run off to Margret's attic to avoid doing the things Gram asks her to do over the summer. I worry that if she doesn't let anyone know where she is, she might cause her family and neighbors to panic when they cannot find her. I also worry that Margaret's parents and the neighbors don't know that she has a key and someone might think she is a burglar and call the police. I wonder if she will tell Albert about her secret hiding spot.

    1. Mrs. Tripp (mom), I agree with you thinking. I think she defiantly has great creativity in her!!! I also agree with you when it says that her family and neighbors might get really worried. I think she will tell Albert about it because it says in the back of the book that they tell many secrets. -Eden

  3. The key is a good gift for for Lily because she can have a private place in Rockaway. Knowing that she sleeps on the porch she doesn’t have much privacy. When Margaret gave her the key she could have some privacy. This can get her in trouble because she can be caught trespassing and go to jail. Or, Gram will get suspicious and follow her to Margaret’s house.

    1. Peter, I totally agree with you! But, the only thing I don't agree with is that she is going to go to jail. I think she will just get in very big trouble. Maybe just maybe the kids jail place. But over all Peter I defiantly agree with all your thinking.

    2. Peter, I like that you point out that she doesn't have any privacy in her own house. I hadn't thought about that!

  4. The key is a good gift for Lily because it is a place to escape from her Grandmother and have some alone time. It said Lily would go up there and write stories. She probably still wants to do that. I think Lily will be in there with Albert because he seems like he will be an important part and he and Lily will be friends like the Orbans intended. She could get in trouble because she will probably be doing things she’s not supposed to do. For example, I think she will tell Albert about her Aunt Celia. She is a spy and if any of the Germans find out she will be killed. So, if Albert knows and tells someone she could be in a lot of danger. Having this freedom may cause her to do some rebellious things.-Addie

    1. When Lily and Margaret are in the attic we learn that Lily's number one problem is telling lies. She promises herself not to tell tiny or big lies ever again. I think you are right in thinking that she may get herself into trouble when she becomes friends with Albert. She may share her gigantic lie about her Aunt with Albert or make up something else that becomes problematic for them both. I am anxious to find out the adventures the key will bring to Lily and hopeful she doesn't get into too much trouble!

    2. Addie, I agree with you that Lily's rebelliousness and lies are going to get her into trouble with Albert. It seems like there is some mystery about Albert that she might learn. I got confused in chapter three. Do you think her Aunt Celia really is a spy in the war? I thought that was one of Lily's "many" lies....hmmmm...

  5. Week 1
Margaret’s gift of a key to the back door is the perfect gift for Lily because Margaret knows how much Lily loves her attic. “It was the perfect place to look out the window and see what was going on all over the place. (pg. 9)” Clearly, Lily and Margaret like to people watch and make up stories: “Mr. Eagen is a Nazi spy... He’s building something in his garage...It could be anything. When he saw me looking in the window, he said I was into everyone’s business. (pg. 3)” Finally, Lily is looking forward to writing stories all summer: “The summer without homework...to write stories for herself and not Sister Eileen. (pg. 2)
Margaret and Lily take risks. Lily is looking forward to sneaking into the movies (pg 2) and Lily seems to lie. She lied to her dad about loving the piano. She lied to Margaret about her aunt being a spy. Margaret stole candy for Lily as a birthday present. Lily didn’t think twice about spying on the Orban’s when they came home late at night with Albert. I don’t think Margaret had any idea that Lily would be trespassing when she enters the house while her family is away. I also don’t think Margaret ever thought that Lily would make a new friend. I wonder if Lily will bring Albert to Margaret’s house. I also wonder if Lily will forget to lock the door, or shut the window. Trouble is certainly possible.

  6. I agree with everyone so far that the key is the perfect gift for Lily because she will need her privacy. She will also need a place to feel close to Margaret.Last of all, she will need a place to write more stories because of her wild imagination that has caused her to lie. All of this may cause problems for her in the future not only with Gram but with others.

  7. Why the key is a good gift for Lily is because she doesn’t care if she gets in trouble or not she just wants to write her next five books. Another reason is because she really doesn’t care what other people say. Why this gift could get Lily in trouble is because what if she shows Albert the attic and then he tells someone or Lily’s grandma she could get in huge trouble. Another reason is what if like a bomb hit near it or somebody started a fire by it could get damaged she could get blamed for this.
