Week 4 Discussion Question

We find out at the beginning of Chapter 20 that Gram has written a letter to Margaret. Lily is very surprised that Gram would do this. Gram's response is, "I knew how she felt. Suppose it was Poppy?" What do you think Gram means by this? Why did she write the letter? Lily then realizes for the first time that Gram misses Poppy. Why is this an important realization for Lily? How does it better help her understand her Gram? Make sure to include text evidence and explain your thinking.

Answer the question in RAD response format and use details from the text to support your answer. Do it in a blogging doc first so you can go back and make changes if necessary. Also, make sure you edit your response before you hit submit.

  1. I think Gram is helping Margaret to remember Eddie. So Margaret can remember Eddie and so Margaret don’t forgot about Eddie. Gram misses Lily’s Poppy and Lily misses Poppy. They think if Poppy is lost same like Eddie. They want remember Poppy not forgot about Poppy. Poppy told Gram what to tell Lily to do. Lily mad at Gram and upset with Gram also Lily think Gram fault but it not true. I think Gram and Lily will get along and not upset each other. They misses Poppy and worried about Poppy might be killed in war or maybe it might lost or even Nazi, Germany, and Hitler caught Poppy. Lily want remember Poppy same Margaret want remember Eddie. They are sad it might he not coming back forever. Lily have one Gram the mom already dead and Poppy have to go to war. Mom is dead and Poppy have to leave Lily. Gram have to take care of Lily because Poppy want Lily stay alive not dead. Gram loved Lily so much and take care of her. Gram misses Lily’s Poppy also Gram have connection with Margaret misses Eddie.

    1. Alyy- You really thought this through and you are totally correct in how the characters were feeling. Even though at the beginning they ay have been mad at each other at this time they have forgotten or let their anger go and have come to realize that we need to love, honor and cherish those loves ones we have here with us in the present. I have really loved this chance to share this book with you. I have noticed that you have learned a lot about history. I have especially enjoyed the conversations we have had while reading the book.

  2. What I think Gram means is, Eddie is lost and she knows thats hard because Poppy is out there and could get lost or killed at any minute. So, she feels what Margaret feels and wants to help. I think Gram wrote the letter because Margaret might be losing memory of Eddie. She knows things about Eddie that might cheer her up and Gram probably feels she should remember her brother like Gram and Lily should remember Poppy. This is an important realization for Lily because she now knows that she is not alone and there is someone else out there that cares about Poppy and misses him. She now understands that Gram is not just strict and someone that makes her play the piano. She is someone who cares and worries about Lily and her Father. One example from the text is, “ Now Gram was crying. Lily could not believe it. She had never seen Gram cry." Gram was crying for Poppy.

  3. What Gram meant by saying, “I knew how she felt.” was she misses Poppy and Margaret misses Eddie so she feels the same because they both miss someone important in their lives so they know how each one feels. Gram wrote the letter because Margaret doesn't know if Eddie is alive or dead so she wrote the letter to help Margaret keep her mind off Eddie missing and keep her on the positive side so Margaret doesn't assume the worst. Finding out that Gram misses Poppy is a good realization for Lily because she didn't really know that Gram loved Poppy really that much. This helps Lily understand Gram because she Lily didn't really think Gram loves her, but now that she sees Gram missing Poppy Lily will know that Gram loves her a lot.

    1. I agree Gram did it so Eddie would not always be on her mind. Also to keep her positive! Great thinking. :)

  4. What I think Gram meant by saying “I knew how she felt, suppose it was Poppy” is that suppose it was Poppy and someone Poppy loved got lost. Sending a picture of the person and a letter will make the person feel better. Margaret was forgetting what Eddie looked like so when Gram sent the picture it made her feel good. She wrote the letter to check in with Margaret and make her feel good.
Lily is not the only one who cares for Poppy. Gram cares about Poppy too and I think Lily is starting to realize that. Lily now see’s that Gram is not an old strict Grandma.

    1. Eden, you are right. I think that Lily now sees Gram as a mom who has sent her son to war. Hopefully they will bond through their shared worry from here on out.

  5. What Gram means is if Lily’s father was taken away by Nazis, they would miss him a lot and would want something that reminded Lily and Gram of him. When Margaret sent her letter, she said that she couldn’t remember Eddies face. Gram probably thought that if that happened to her son, she would want to have a picture of him. Gram wrote the letter to Margaret because she really wanted someone to find Eddie because he and Margaret were really close. This is an important realization for Lily because Gram is always telling her to do a bunch of things like practicing the piano. She realizes that Gram cares about her and misses Lily’s father.

  6. What Gram means is like she loves her son and her grandchild so she doesn’t want to lose anyone.
Why Gram wrote that letter is because she really loves Poppy and she wants him to come back so she wrote that note to Margaret to help her feel better about missing Eddie. It also made Lily really happy. Why this is an important realization for Lily is because she realizes her Gram loves her so so much. She just wants to make her happy so she doesn't feel alone From chapters 20 and 21 Gram started crying when Lily asked her why she sent that letter to Margaret and to Poppy. She isn’t the mean person Lily always makes her out to be.
