Week 5 Discussion Question

At the end of the story Gram says to Lily, "It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst of times, something lovely happens." What do you think Gram is talking about? How do you think the war changed Lily? Why do you think she said that even though she was going back to Rockaway to the same ocean and the same house that "things would never be the same again?" Make sure to use details from the story to support your thinking.

  1. What I think Gram is talking abouts is that even though the war does terrible things it can bring great things with it. Like with Lily, the war was a really hard thing that people went through, but it did bring Albert. Also she got to see her Dad at the end. The war brang Lily a new friend and a new life. What I mean by a new life is like Lily got to be with Albert and she became way more brave and courageous. The war can change people in good ways, but also bad ways. It changed Lily in a good way. It taught her a good lesson and Albert put some more joy in her. That made Lily a better person. What she meant by that it would never be the same is that she now has so many memories about Rockaway and Albert. She doesn’t know if Albert will ever be back so she thinks it will never be the same if Albert wasn’t there. Also now that the war has ended everybody would not be so nervous and scared. It will just be a normal life and she is not used to it like that.

    1. I totally agree Eden the war made Lily more brave and courageous. She is also more honest.

    2. Eden, super thoughts. I bet it was very hard for people to return to "normalcy" after WWII, especially because some families, like Margaret's had lost sons, brothers or husbands in the war. You are spot on that Lily was positively affected by the war. I loved watching her grow throughout the story.

  2. What Gram means is if the war never happened, Lily wouldn’t have met Albert. Albert’s parents wrote the newspaper to stop the Nazis from invading their country. If the war never happened, then Albert would still be living with his parents and sister in Hungary. The war changed Lily because Lily always told lies to her friends and when she told a lie that could have costed Albert his life, when he actually tried to get to Ruth in a really bad storm, she learned not to tell that big of a lie again. Things might not be the same for Lily in Rockaway because if Albert isn’t there, she’ll miss him a lot and be pretty board for the whole summer.

    1. Lily, I think you are right that Lily learned the hard way how dangerous a lie can become. I was so glad that Albert didn't get lost at sea in his efforts to find Ruth. I also agree that she is probably thinking how different this summer will be without all of her adventures with Albert.

  3. What I think Gram means by this is, if the war would not of started then Lily would never have met Albert. There were bad parts of the war like Alberts parents dying and there were good parts like, friendships becoming real. Wars are dark but can bring out the good side of things. How the war changed Lily was she realized that lies could hurt people and she decided not to do it anymore. For example, in the text it said, “Every time she started to lie, she thought of Albert and closed her mouth.” I think Lily feels bad and now understands the danger of lies and sadly she did not find this out the easy way.The war has also changed Lily by bringing Albert to her. She now has a best friend that she can depend on, someone who understands her and will always have her back. I think she said "things would never be the same again." Even though she was going back to Rockaway to the same ocean and the same house, she would not see Albert as often. Most importantly, Lily is a changed person she understands the consequences. She also has became close to someone she loves who might go to another country. Things will never be the same because people are not the same anymore. Even Gram has changed. She has become more understanding and forgiving. Poppy has been near war, that must have left a scar. They are all more mature and loving.

  4. What Gram is talking about is even though Margaret and Poppy were gone, Lily still made something out of the summer. Lily made something out of the summer by being with Albert and Lily barely lies now. The war changed Lily because she can’t be with Margaret or Poppy. There were no friends for Lily, then she became friends with Albert. “Things would never be the same again” because Lily has changed because she knows more about Gram and she is loving Gram more than before because lily was just hi bye and now she is like hi Gram hows your day going.Another thing that has change is, Margaret might be gone for a few more summers. Plus, Albert is there and the book that was left in the boat in the storm changed because it was soaked so the ink probably smeared so it changed .

    1. Peter, I love your example that you use to show that Lily has grown through her experience with the war! You are right that she has become more thoughtful, considerate and interested in her Gram as a person. I think that happened when she realized that her Gram was Poppy's mother and had sent her "son" to war.

  5. Gram is talking about that Poppy came back. Gram and Lily’s became closer and together. Lily got best friend is Albert she so happy not angry. Lily always be nice to Gram. I think the war change to Lily because the beginning she hate it and mad and not happy she keeping hate it . Something she dislike something like she calling piano name damn. Now the end she loves it and she have new best friend is Albert. Albert always nice to Lily. Albert and Lily get along and friend each other. Last time she began the story. She always lies to her friend. She told her my aunt is Nazi spy to against Germany for U.S but she didn't tell the truth. The end war she not going lies again ever. She tell the truth because the war is done so she don’t need to lie. She always sick of war because her Poppy have to go war not staying forever with Lily and Gram. Lily misses Poppy so much and Gram misses too. So Poppy have to stay war not going in home. Lily is so upset and want Poppy come back. Then Poppy come back and stay with Lily and Gram. I think Albert will be back and I think Lily come back to Rockaway too in summer. The same ocean and same house not different because maybe they might same living together. Both of them are misses each other and want come back. I think Ruth and Albert going back to Rockaway and playing with Lily.

    1. Alyy, you have shared a lot of great thoughts here! I love how you point out that Lily's character was very negative in the beginning of the story but throughout the year she became more loving and positive. I agree with you that Albert was a good influence as a new friend for her.

  6. What do you think Gram is talking about. What gram is talking about is that sometimes war can be good because like your relatives or your grown siblings are in the war fighting for their country and freedom and to protect people and people they love . Also you still have your grandson or granddaughter to keep you company if the grandmas daughter or son dies in the army she has someone to love and take care of you.
How this war changed Lily is because she is going to Rockaway, she’s not going too see Albert for a long time and her world is kind ruined because of the war. Plus she doesn't really have any friends in Rockaway. Why I think this is because she had a normal life and then it started going into chaos because her dad is in the army and Margaret moved away and the war is going on and now she has to go back to Rockaway. Also. Also she has to leave behind everything she did and had because of the war. What Lily means by “everything won’t be the same is because the war happened She's leaving Albert and Paprika behind and she barely even knows any one at Rockaway and she’s gone through a lot where she is now.

    1. I really liked your description of the second part a lot. I disagree with what Gram was talking about. Gram was trying to say that good things com out of bad times and that enemy's are made and friends are made.

  7. Xavier, I think you are right that the lovely thing that could have happened is Lily and Gram getting to know each other better. She might also have been talking about the special bond that Lily forged with Albert. I see your point that Lily is anxious about returning to Rockaway because she is likely remembering all of the stressful events of the summer before.
